About the Program:
Rockefeller Center is one of the most iconic Art Deco sites in the world, and its sculpture program is a huge reason why. Join us for a walking tour with Anthony Pellino as he takes us through "New Frontiers," the thematic program of artwork that shaped the Center's twelve original buildings in the 1930s.
We'll explore how classically trained architects and artists embraced the bold, modern language of the Jazz Age. See how Rene Paul Chambellan's Fountainhead Figures use perspective to frame the space. Look closely at Lee Lawrie's monumental Atlas which dominates the entrance to the International Building, and Isamu Noguchi's News, set dramatically against the flat planes of Rockefeller Plaza.
We'll also trace the stylization and experimentation that defined the era: the staccato rhythms of Lawrie's Wisdom, the innovation in Hildreth Meiere's Dance, Drama, and Song, and the bold material choices in Attilio Piccirilli's Youth Leading Industry.
This walking tour is a rare chance to see how Art Deco design turned an entire urban complex into a work of art.

About the Guide:
Anthony Pellino is a New York State Certified Interior Designer, NCIDQ Certified and an ASID Professional. He practices interior design in New York City with a focus on furniture design. He holds a BFA in Environmental Design from Parsons and a Master of Architecture from Columbia's Graduate School of Architecture. Anthony also creates public programming in historic architecture and design for the National Historic Landmark Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx. Through his City Moderne project, he explores Building Information Modeling software alongside the tenets of Art Deco design and their impact on the contemporary city.
