Jules Leleu and French Art Deco

About the Event:

Join us at Maison Gerard for an unforgettable evening learning about the life and legacy of Jules Leleu. In this rare opportunity only for ADSNY members, we will also get to see original archival Leleu furniture up close — pieces that represent some of the finest examples of French Art Deco craftsmanship in existence.

Maison Leleu opened in Paris in 1924 and quickly rose to prominence in the 1920s, renowned for its richly refined furniture and lavish interior design. Often overshadowed by Art Deco icons Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann and Jean-Michel Frank, Jules Leleu was recognized as a major force in the Art Deco movement and was awarded a grand prize at the 1925 Exposition des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris. He was responsible for designing French embassies around the world and worked on interiors for several ocean liners, including SS Normandie and SS Ile de France.

About the Speaker:

Our host, Benoist F. Drut, director of Maison Gerard, is an authority on Leleu and has written the introduction to The House of Leleu, the definitive reference book on the firm, still in existence today. M. Drut will trace the history of Leleu's Art Deco designs as he guides us through this stunning display of archival works.
