Costumes by Erté: From Paris Couture to Broadway Revues and Hollywood Glamour

About the Program:

Join fashion historian Summer Anne Lee for an in-depth look at the life and work of Erté, one of the most influential designers of the Art Deco period. Best known today for his highly stylized illustrations and fantastical fashion imagery, Erté profoundly influenced the world of performance costume. By highlighting Erté’s work for Broadway alongside his achievements in Paris and Hollywood, this talk emphasizes his work in New York City, where his costume designs for musical revues—including the Ziegfeld Follies—helped shape the visual language of the modern showgirl.

Tracing Erté’s career from his early work with Paul Poiret in Paris to his later projects for the Broadway stage and Hollywood screen, this presentation explores how his distinctive style of theatrical fantasy moved across fashion, illustration, and costume. Attendees will learn about his contributions to magazines, stage productions, and film, as well as how his designs embodied and popularized the Art Deco aesthetic.

This online event will include a richly illustrated PowerPoint—with wonderful images that you will be able to see on your computer screen, tablet, or mobile device.

Can't join us at the time of the live Zoom event ? No problem! Those who register will receive a recording of the entire program a few days after the live presentation so you can watch at a time more convenient for you.
