Join us for an early evening stroll through East Midtown, where Art Deco still dazzles at every turn.
Explore a neighborhood that transformed from a gritty landscape of factories, breweries, slaughterhouses, and tenements into one of Manhattan’s most desirable residential districts. Discover how a riverside swimming spot frequented by neighborhood urchins evolved into an elegant harbor for personal luxury yachts.
We’ll encounter an extraordinary collection of Deco architecture—from grand residences built for New York’s elite, to stylish middle-class apartment houses, to a remarkable residence created exclusively for sorority women. This often-overlooked part of the city is filled with architectural surprises and Deco treasures.
We’ll then head west into the heart of Midtown for a look at a pair of New York’s most celebrated Art Deco exemplars.
Spend a summer’s eve uncovering hidden gems, remarkable history, and some of the city’s finest examples of Art Deco design.
About the Guide:
Our guide, Linda Zagaria, is a native New Yorker, who serves as Vice President of ADSNY. She held the position of Executive Director of the Beaux Arts Alliance, a non-profit cultural organization dedicated to celebrating the cultural links between France and the United States. As educator and school administrator, she was responsible for curriculum development and implementation, grant writing, and organizing and conducting professional development workshops and conferences. From 2016 to 2020 Zagaria served as President of the National Arts Club, where she is still active. Her passion for the Art Deco period extends to the glorious black and white films of the 1930s and a penchant for Jazz Age fashion.
