About the Event:

The Art Deco Society of New York is pleased to invite its members to a special private tour of one of the Financial District's most extraordinary Art Deco interiors — one that has existed largely out of sight and out of mind for decades.

Built in 1931 by the renowned firm of Cross & Cross, 20 Exchange Place housed some of Wall Street's most powerful banking empires — a soaring 59-story Deco tower sheathed in granite and limestone, adorned with nickel silver doors, heroic sculptural figures, and carved coins representing nations across the globe. The New York Times called this Art Deco building "magnificent" upon its opening. Other unnamed critics had called it "one of the handsomest buildings" in New York City.

Then, the banks left. One by one, the financial institutions that had defined the building's identity relocated, and by the late 1980s the last of them was gone. Its interiors, its stories, and its extraordinary craftsmanship became largely invisible to the city that walked past it every day.

In 2024, a major revitalization brought it back — but only parts are accessible to the public.

In this exclusive tour, ADSNY members will get to go further, into stunning Art Deco spaces the public doesn't see, guided by the people who spearheaded the project.
