 Beyond the Grand Concourse:

Hidden Art Deco Treasures of the Bronx

About the Program

Celebrate World Art Deco Month with a spring afternoon stroll through one of the Bronx’s most surprising architectural enclaves. While many admirers know the iconic Deco masterpieces lining the Grand Concourse, this special walking tour ventures beyond the boulevard an into the hidden gem where the Grand Concourse meets Mosholu Parkway in the Bedford Park triangle.

Here, you’ll uncover an extraordinary collection of Art Deco apartment houses that once defined luxury living in the Jazz Age. Highlights include three significant buildings by Israel Crausman, a master of the sleek Streamline Moderne style, including his crowning achievement. We’ll also explore works by Herbert Lilien, one of the Bronx’s most prolific—yet often overlooked—architects.

Though time has altered some façades, each building tells a story. Along the way, we’ll step inside stunning Art Deco lobbies rich with geometric detail, elegant materials, and period craftsmanship—spaces that reveal why this neighborhood was once considered the height of modern sophistication.

Join us to experience the glamour, innovation, and optimism of 1930s design—right here in the Bronx. You’ll never look at Bedford Park the same way again.

About the Guide:

John Howard, a Bronxite by marriage has called the borough home since 1985. Originally from the United Kingdom, John was educated there as an architect before moving to New York City, where he built a career in corporate interior construction.

Combining his professional expertise with his passion for Art Deco, John founded the Bronx Art Deco Apartment House Archive (badaha.org), launched in 2024. The project shines a spotlight on the borough’s remarkable Deco apartment buildings and the talented architects who designed them, with the goal of expanding official recognition and strengthening preservation efforts for these architectural treasures.
