About the Program:
In this Zoom presentation, Bruce Peter, Design Historian from the Glasgow School of Art, takes us on a fascinating virtual tour based on his new book Art Deco Scotland: Design and Architecture in the Jazz Age.
In this illustrated talk we will discover the background and development of the Art Deco style in Scotland’s towns and cities in the inter-war era. Peter will give an overview of the modern decorative arts in Scotland since the mid-nineteenth century and examine the continental and American influences in the early-twentieth century.
Echoing his new book’s thematic treatment, the presentation will conclude with examples of significant Art Deco architecture and design which emerged in Scotland – housing, travel, public environments, commercial and industrial buildings, hospitality venues, energy generation, and ocean liners.

About the Speaker:
Bruce Peter is Professor of Design History at The Glasgow School of Art. He is a
graduate of the GSA, The Royal College of Art and the University of Glasgow. His PhD, ‘Form Follows Fun: Modernism and Modernity in British Pleasure Architecture 1925-1940’ was published by Routledge. He is the author of nearly fifty books on various aspects of modern architecture, design and transport history.
