Parkchester: An Art Deco Revelation
About the Program
Join the Art Deco Society of New York for a summer stroll through Parkchester. Led by architectural historian Matt Postal, our tour covers this 129-acre residential community in the Bronx, famous for its marvelous and unmatched collection of public sculpture, including countless pieces by period sculptors, many of whom contributed works to the 1939 New York World’s Fair. Built from 1938 to 1942, the neighborhood includes Metropolitan Oval, with its Fantasia fountain, and the former Loew's American Theater, as well as many colorful streamlined storefronts and literally hundreds of playful figures and plaques fabricated by the Federal Seaboard Terra Cotta Corporation. With some sculptures deteriorated and recently removed, there is great concern for Parkchester's future. This is a perfect opportunity to see its wonders before they disappear.
How to get to Parkchester:
If you want to go by public transportation you can take the MTA 6 subway train uptown directly to the Parkchester Station to meet the group. You can also take the MTA BxM6 express bus departing Madison Ave and East 24th Street at 10:15AM, Madison Ave and East 59th Street at 10:25AM or 3rd Ave and East 85th St at 10:34AM. The bus will drop you off on Metropolitan Avenue and Benedict Avenue in Parkchester at 11AM.
