Art Deco Motoring: The Automobile Mascots of Rene Lalique
About the Program
René Lalique is probably best known for his exquisite creations in glass during the 1920s - vases, jewelry, perfume bottles, even interiors, such as the elegant glass columns of the SS Normandie's Grand Salon. However, with the rise of the automobile during that period, Lalique created graceful sculptures known as mascots to decorate these new luxury cars. Lalique authority Nicholas Dawes will present a comprehensive account of the range of thirty glass mascots offered by Lalique from 1925 until WWII.
Mr. Dawes is the author of four standard works including Lalique Glass (1986), Art Deco (2000) and Bespoke Mascots (2014). He is considered the country's leading expert on the work of René Lalique. Attendees are invited to bring Lalique or other mascots of the period to the event for informal identification and appraisal by Mr. Dawes.
