Art Deco Motoring: The Automobile Mascots of Rene Lalique

About the Program

René Lalique is probably best known for his exquisite creations in glass during the 1920s - vases, jewelry, perfume bottles, even interiors, such as the elegant glass columns of the SS Normandie's Grand Salon. However, with the rise of the automobile during that period, Lalique created graceful sculptures known as mascots to decorate these new luxury cars. Lalique authority Nicholas Dawes will present a comprehensive account of the range of thirty glass mascots offered by Lalique from 1925 until WWII.

Mr. Dawes is the author of four standard works including Lalique Glass (1986), Art Deco (2000) and Bespoke Mascots (2014). He is considered the country's leading expert on the work of René Lalique. Attendees are invited to bring Lalique or other mascots of the period to the event for informal identification and appraisal by Mr. Dawes.

About the Speaker:

Nicholas Dawes began his career in his native England and brings over forty years of experience in the antiques and fine art auction business. He emigrated to New York in 1979 and has pursued his career here as an auctioneer, appraiser, author, lecturer, and antiques dealer. Dawes is a former Department Head and auctioneer at Phillips and at Sotheby’s in New York and has organized his own auctions at several prominent auction houses.  He held annual exhibitions of Lalique glass mascots at the Pebble Beach Concours D’Elegance for over twenty years since 1993 and is considered this country’s leading authority on the work of René Lalique. Dawes is the author of four standard works on decorative arts, together with scores of articles, and he lectures widely internationally.  He has been a faculty member of Parsons School of Design since 1984 and has taught Luxury Marketing at Columbia Business School and courses on English and French furniture at Bard Graduate Center. He is a seasoned appraiser across a variety of specialties and has been a board member of AAA (Appraisers Association of America) since 2019.  He is active within many charitable organizations and is the former Chairman and CEO of Salmagundi, the oldest artists' club in New York City founded in 1871.  Dawes first appeared as an appraiser on Antiques Roadshow for PBS in the second-ever broadcast of the show, and has appeared regularly ever since, discussing ceramics, glass, silver, and other decorative arts.
