A Summer Stroll Exploring Deco in Brighton Beach
About the Program
On this summer stroll, architectural historian Matt Postal will lead us on an in-depth feast exploring the many remarkable Art Deco buildings of the enclave that is Brighton Beach.
A closer examination into the interwar past of this neighborhood, on the Coney Island peninsula, shows it to be one of the city’s top destinations for Art Deco explorers. On our visit to this Deco mecca we will discover residential and commercial buildings that rival those found in the more renowned Grand Concourse neighborhood of The Bronx. Like its Bronx counterpart, Brighton Beach is filled with magnificent examples of the modern architectural vocabulary that we know today as Art Deco. Behind many of these beautifully preserved façades are even more stunning interior spaces that we will have a chance to visit.
After the tour those who wish to continue their seaside escape may opt to take a 15 minute walk to Coney Island for Nathan's Famous hot dogs or enjoy lunch in one of the many restaurants in Brighton Beach's "Little Odessa" - without having to board a plane.
About the Guide: Our guide, Matt Postal, is an architectural historian, specializing in 20th century architecture and the co-author of The Guide to NYC Landmarks.
