About the Program

Art Deco Society of New York members have been eagerly anticipating the reopening of the famed "Red Room," a New York Art Deco masterpiece by American muralist Hildreth Meière, a pioneer in embracing the Art Deco aesthetic in her murals for corporate America.

Now our wait is over. During this special evening, we will have a chance not only to see Meière's masterpiece up-close in a private visit, but we will be treated to a talk by architectural historian Kathleen Skolnik in another space in the recently renovated Ralph Walker building at One Wall Street

Skolnik’s richly illustrated talk will explore Meière's use of vibrant colors, geometric patterns, and stylized figures in her work which complemented perfectly the sleek vertical stepped-back skyscrapers that housed the headquarters of many American businesses of her day.

Always adept in tailoring her modernistic designs to reflect the business interests of her client, as the consultant on color and scale for the client reception room for the Irving Trust Company at One Wall Street, Meière created an inviting atmosphere with an aura of elegance and sophistication.

After the talk we will experience the Red Room in its new incarnation as the centerpiece of the famed French department store Printemps, in its first American outpost. For this special occasion, Printemps will set up a Champagne cart, so that anyone who wishes may purchase some bubbly to celebrate the latest incarnation of this rare interior landmark.

Registration for this event is limited and available only to current ADSNY members.
