ART DECO AT 100:

A Day at the Nassau County Museum of Art

About the Event:

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF EARLY BIRD PRICING for this Jazz Age immersion as we travel to the Nassau County Museum of Art situated in a stunning estate on Long Island’s Gold Coast for an all-day adventure set around the exhibition ART DECO AT 100.

This fascinating exhibition features objects that recall the lifestyle, parties, sleek automobiles, and fashion of Jay Gatsby and Long Island’s Gold Coast clique as they lived the gilded life. The captivating exhibition showcases significant cultural advancements during the Roaring Twenties/Jazz Age including fashion, furnishings, and lifestyle which defined the era. We’ll see works by such artists as Erté, Fernand Léger, Guy Pène du Bois, Gaston Lachaise, Elie Nadelman, and Reginald Marsh. Dazzling examples of furniture, decorative arts, and elegant fashion, along with photography and poster art, convey the Art Deco spirit one hundred years later.

Attendees travel to the Nassau Museum on their own or meet our group to begin our journey at Grand Central Station where we board the Long Island Railroad for the ride to Port Washington. Taxis will await us at the station to whisk us to the Museum in Roslyn Harbor. There, we will be met by Chief Curator Franklin Perrell who will lead us on a private tour of the exhibition before the museum opens to the public.

Following the tour, we spend time exploring on our own before enjoying a leisurely lunch set in the estate’s beautiful Tented Pavilion. After lunch, we will have the opportunity to explore the lush spring gardens filled with sculpture from the museum’s permanent collection, ending with a surprise sure to delight all Deco enthusiasts, the opportunity to see Walter Chrysler’s own car, brought to the museum in honor of our visit!

The afternoon will conclude with a lecture on the oeuvre of Gaston Lachaise by Lachaise Foundation Director Paula Hornbostel. The day wraps at approximately 4:00 PM when the taxis collect us for a return to the train station for the ride home.

EARLY BIRD PRICING ENDS MARCH 21ST. Space is limited. This is a members-only event. If you are currently not a member but wish to attend, please consider becoming a member here.

PLEASE NOTE: Those wishing to forgo the train and motor on their own to the museum may do so. Just be certain to arrive by 10:30 AM.
