Fashion at the 1925 Paris Exhibition

About the Event:

As we begin our April month long celebration of the hundredth birthday of the April 28, 1925 opening of the Paris Exposition, ADSNY members are invited to the party! Join us for a special free birthday celebration on Wednesday, April 2nd at the Fashion Institute of Technology.

Visitors to L'Exposition internationale des arts décoratifs et industriels modernes were greeted with the most imaginative, original, innovative, and, yes, utterly modern design which graced everything from interiors to decorative arts, fabrics to mechanical devices, architecture to fashion. Imagine being present at this global gathering of the world’s top-tier artistic talent. Join MFIT Deputy Director Patricia Mears, Swann Gallery President Nicho Lowry, and jewelry specialist Virginia Salem in an energetic discussion, moderated by MFIT Couture Council member Gordon Kendall, in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the 1925 groundbreaking Paris exhibition. The panel will discuss the exhibition’s continuing influences on fashion and design at this special presentation.

Our sincere thanks to benefactor Gordon Kendall for his generous financial support of this event for ADSNY.

About the Presenters:

Nicholas D. Lowry was born into a family of antiquarian book dealers and was raised and educated in New York City as well as attending schools in England and Germany. He is President and Principal Auctioneer of Swann Auction Galleries, the third generation in his family to hold that title. He is also the Director of Swann’s Vintage Posters Department. As one of the world’s foremost authorities on vintage posters, Lowry has spent nearly 30 years serving as poster appraiser on the PBS television show Antiques Roadshow, on which he appears regularly. Mr. Lowry is also a member of the Advisory Board of New York's Poster House Museum where he was also a founding patron.

Virginia Salem is an international jewelry specialist. She has worked with precious stones for decades, from the start of her career with luxury retailers Neiman Marcus and E.B. Horn Co. to the auction marketplace, including opening Bonhams New York's fine jewelry department in 2005.
Ms. Salem studied art history in college and loved paintings and sculpture. "I was placed reluctantly in the jewelry department as an intern and worked with Art Deco Kashmir rings and Burmese rubies. I discovered Italian revival jewelry from the 1880s which resembled small three-dimensional sculptures. The applied tiny gold bead and wirework drew me in and then it dawned on me 'Jewelry is like a tiny sculpture! It's art you wear.'" A USPAP certified member of the American Association of Appraisers and a frequent contributor of trade articles on period and estate jewelry, Ms. Salem remains active as a buyer and seller of fine jewelry. She is also sought after as a lecturer and consulting appraiser throughout the United States. She lives in New York and Massachusetts.

Patricia Mears is deputy director of The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology. She is the author of Madame Grès: Sphinx of Fashion and coauthor of Ralph Rucci: The Art of Weightlessness.
