Tamara De Lempicka & The Art of Survival
About the Event:
Join the Art Deco Society of New York for a special evening at the stunning De Lamar Mansion, home of the Polish Consulate in New York, for a lively discussion about artist Tamara de Lempicka. We will be joined by Tamara’s granddaughter, Marisa de Lempicka; Anne Paddy, author of Tamara de Lempicka. Behind the Scenes; and award-wining documentary film maker, Julie Rubio, on the eve of the New York premiere of her new film, The True Story of Tamara De Lempicka & The Art of Survival.
We will hear the empowering story of the legendary artist whose works spoke to the future and discover how Tamara’s remarkable paintings reveal both her personal torments and her enduring spirit as she navigated rapidly changing 20th century world events.
Despite enduring sexism, ageism, and antisemitism, Lempicka was undaunted in her quest to be seen by a world that did not recognize women like her--female artists, Jews, gay or bisexual. She broke down barriers and opened doors for others, while putting her struggle, turmoil, and truth onto her canvas, often exposing her secrets for the viewer to witness.
Julie Rubio will discuss her discoveries when researching Tamara’s compelling story, and how she came to better understand why Lempicka was marginalized during her lifetime and why in some circles, that is still the case today.
We will come away with a better understanding of this extraordinary woman and why Tamara’s legacy continues to inspire and captivate new generations.
Following this first in-person event of the New Year, join us for a champagne reception as we toast Art Deco's 2025 Centennial celebration. Our sincere thanks to Champagne Collet for making tonight's reception possible.
