Worshipping Deco: An Inside Look at New York's Art Deco Churches and Synagogues

About the Event:

The setting for this in-person illustrated talk and tour is Temple Emanu-el, a New York Art Deco landmark. Architectural historian Matt Postal will give us an insider look at many New York City houses of worship constructed in the Art Deco style during the late 1920s and 1930s as he examines the impact of machine-age aesthetics on these new houses of worship and their richly-decorated interiors. He will also highlight the prolific career of architect Henry V. Murphy, who designed more than fifty religious buildings for the Brooklyn Diocese.

After Matt's presentation, Temple Emanu-el's Administrator Emeritus, Mark Heutlinger, will lead those of us new to the stunning temple, on a tour of its bold Art Deco architecture and unique interior decoration — which comprises over 20 types of stone; ceramic, glass, and marble mosaics; Guastavino tiles; ornamental metalwork; painted and gilded plaster; and inlaid wood marquetry.

A not to be missed highlight of the evening is the unique opportunity to step into the Temple Sanctuary and observe up-close the details of the exquisite design and craftsmanship of designer Hildreth Meière's Art Deco masterpiece, as well as a look at the recent restoration of the building's magnificent Art Deco interiors.
