“Blow some my way”: Jazz Age Women and Cigarette Holders Video Event
About the Program:
Cigarette holders, while small in size, hold a multitude of history. In the first half of the twentieth century, the rise in popularity of cigarette holders coincided with the women’s rights movement—by the 1920s, smoking for women became a signal of freedom, away from restrictions on how femininity should be defined—as well as improved plastics technology, as costume jewelry became all the rage.
Beginning with a brief history of smoking culture and its accoutrements, this talk will explore the popularity of the cigarette holder in the Jazz Age and examine specific holders in a range of colors, materials, and styles, including those by well-known designers like Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, and more.
