Downtown Brooklyn Walking Tour

About the Program

Join ADSNY and architectural historian Matt Postal for a delightful spring walking tour to explore Brooklyn beyond the brownstones.

Downtown Brooklyn has changed of late, but there are still many Art Deco delights to uncover and discover. Starting near Times Plaza, named for the Brooklyn-Times Union newspaper, architectural historian Matt Postal will explore this lively crossroads, viewing handsome 1920s and 1930s structures built as schools, stores, hotels, and offices. Highlights include the short-lived but still regal New York Times printing plant by Albert Kahn; an industrial high school for girls devoted to the garment trade; and a cluster of structures built for leading Brooklyn retailers, such as Loeser's Department Store, which financed a surviving subterranean passage linking the store to the new Independent subway system. We'll conclude just outside the Brooklyn Heights Historic District, where we'll consider two contrasting approaches to Deco bank design, one, an often ignored addition with large stylized eagles, and the other, a small setback skyscraper by Corbett, Harrison & MacMurray, the distinguished team that worked on Rockefeller Center, with a unique ornamental screen by the great architectural sculptor Rene Chambellan.

About the Guide:
Our guide, Matt Postal, is an architectural historian, specializing in 20th century architecture and the co-author of The Guide to NYC Landmarks.
