Miracle on (and off) 34th Street
About the Program
Join architectural historian Matt Postal and the Art Deco Society of New York for a special Sunday morning meander across 34th Street. This walking tour highlights some of midtown Manhattan’s most compelling Art Deco designs, including major skyscrapers and loft buildings and some small structures that you may have always wondered about.
From residential Murray Hill through the lively Garment Center, Matt will share with us French designer Edgar Brandt’s masterful metalwork for Cheney Silks; a streamlined furniture store in the shadow of the Empire State Building; developer Julius Nelson’s “modernized Greek” office tower; and the storied Hotel New Yorker, with its prominent red neon (now LED) sign, and much more. Those who want to spend more time at the Hotel New Yorker may decide to indulge in brunch at its famed Tick Tock diner.
About the Guide: Our guide, Matt Postal, is an architectural historian, specializing in 20th century architecture and the co-author of The Guide to NYC Landmarks.
