Finding Salvation in the West Village

About the Program

Join architectural historian Matt Postal and the Art Deco Society of New York for a special autumn afternoon walking tour exploring West Village Deco, including a first ever ADSNY visit inside the magnificent headquarters of the Salvation Army, a New York City Landmark.

Our winding route of the West Village will feature a number of unusual and often unnoticed Art Deco sites, such as a streamlined bakery facade, an IND electrical substation, and splendid Art Deco apartment houses by such leading figures as Emery Roth and Rosario Candela.

The afternoon will conclude at the Salvation Army headquarters, erected in the late 1920s, for a special invitational private tour of its Art Deco Centennial Memorial Temple – a rare religious interior by Ralph Walker, and one that is seldom open to the public.

You won’t want to miss this special afternoon discovering some often overlooked Art Deco gems. Spaces are limited so claim your place today!

About the Guide:
Our guide, Matt Postal, is an architectural historian, specializing in 20th century architecture and the co-author of The Guide to NYC Landmarks.
