A New Perspective on Classic Art Deco Skyscrapers: When 21st Century Technology Meets 20th Century Architecture

About the Program:

See details of Jazz Age gems as you’ve never seen them before with the authors of the stunning new book Highrises: Art Deco, reflecting artist Chris Hytha and writer Mark Houser’s cross-country odyssey to highlight outstanding historic skyscrapers from a new perspective.

Meet Hytha and Houser who will share stories and images of soaring Art Deco structures - close up as never seen before.

Hytha’s use of drone technology and state of the art software showcases the seldom seen intricate and ornate details of iconic Art Deco buildings, while Houser recounts the histories of each Deco Skyscraper and its architects, drawing upon traditional research and featuring vintage newspaper coverage.

Join us in-person or via Zoom for this hybrid event and see iconic Art Deco masterpieces across the country as you’ve never been able to see them until now.

This event will be available in person at The General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen of the City of New York and via Zoom. When registering, please be sure to choose whether you will be attending in person or watching via the live stream on Zoom.

About the Speaker and the Book:

Coming from Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, whose skyscrapers are practically unknown to outsiders, Chris Hytha and Mark Houser went in search of inspiring but often unappreciated tall buildings across America. Their online Highrises Collection now comprises nearly 200 landmarks in 30 states, from Minnesota to Alabama, and more than 60 cities, from Buffalo to San Francisco — and New York City, too, of course.

Launched as a Kickstarter project, their new oversized coffee table book was fully funded in 24 hours and raised more than double its initial target. Highrises has won rave reviews from the Chicago Sun-Times, San Francisco Magazine, and Time Out, among others, and has attracted millions of views on Instagram, X, and TikTok.
