Dining With Deco

About the Program:

A central aspect of the culture and lifestyle of the 1920s and 30s was the creation and consumption of food. You could live in an Art Deco world where everything from the soup to the nuts was inflected with the style. As a pervasive mode, Deco shaped a total environment, of which food and drink were an integral part. The presentation will focus upon some of the more striking results of this encounter, including menus to peruse, books to instruct, places to eat, food to purchase, and drinks to imbibe.

This event is dedicated to the life and legacy of ADSNY’s dear friend and mentor, Michael J. Smith, the design pioneer who founded two landmark galleries in New York City specializing in American design from the 1920s-40s: Depression Modern and Adelaide. After his death in 2016 ADSNY established an event each year on his birthday, May 8. This year's topic is particularly fitting, as Michael loved to entertain in true Deco style with crystal and dinnerware from the Normandie, home baked confections, as delicious as they were visually stunning. Can't join us at the time of the live Zoom event ? No problem! Those who register will receive a recording of the entire program a few days after the live presentation. When you sign up for the program you have the opportunity to watch, or rewatch, the recording at a time more convenient for you.
