Diving into Deco
About the Program:
The popularity of recreational swimming in the United States surged in the 1930s as facilities for its enjoyment became widely available to the general public. From New York to San Francisco, Americans flocked to the shore. Others motored down to enjoy the ocean surf and tropical climate of South Miami Beach. And those in the nation’s heartland cooled off in municipal pools, many supported by New Deal funding. As the summer season approaches, join the Art Deco Society of New York to explore the influence of the Art Deco movement of this time on beach houses, swimming pools, swimsuit design, and advertising intended to lure visitors to these destinations. This April event is part of the International Coalition of Art Deco Societies (ICADS) World Art Deco Month, with this year's theme of sports to commemorate the 1924 Olympic games in France as part of our run up to next year's ICADS World Congress in Paris.

About the Speaker:
Kathleen Murphy Skolnik teaches art and architectural history at Roosevelt University in Chicago, Illinois and leads seminars on Art Deco design at the Newberry Library, a private research library also in Chicago. She is the co-author of
The Art Deco Murals of Hildreth Meière and a contributor to the recently published
Art Deco Chicago: Designing Modern America. Her articles have appeared in ADSNY's Art Deco New York journal and she currently serves on ADSNY's Advisory Board.
