About the Program:
East side, west side, all across midtown lie some of the most iconic, immortal, and sublime examples of the architecture that dazzled the world at the time of its inception. Before 57th Street became known as Billionaire’s Row, sporting twenty-first century supertalls casting ominous shadows across Central Park, Midtown Manhattan from 57th to 59th Streets was - and still is - a trove of Art Deco treasures. Tour guide extraordinaire Tony Robins takes us on a jazz-age jaunt of Midtown marvels clustered along 57th and 59th Streets. We’ll see that stylish emporium known as Bloomingdale’s, and the corporate headquarters of Squibb, Fuller, and Hearst. And let’s not forget those luxury digs along Central Park South, such as the Essex House, Barbizon Plaza, and Hampshire House. We’ll even discover a former Fox Film Studio - right here in Manhattan!
About the Guide:
Anthony W. Robins has been guiding natives and visitors to the city’s wonders of steel and stone for decades. He has led hundreds of walking tours of New York history and architecture. A founding member of ADSNY, Robins created the Society’s original tour program in 1981. In 2017, the Guides Association of New York City honored him with the “Guiding Spirit Award.” He lectures on New York history and architecture to audiences both in the United States and abroad, teaches various levels of students about architecture and the development of New York City, and has authored six books and a number of short guidebooks, as well as many newspaper and magazine articles. His award-winning book, New York Art Deco: A Guide to Gotham’s Jazz Age Architecture (SUNY Press, 2017), explores Art Deco throughout the five boroughs.
