About the Program

This time our ADSNY perambulations take us to upper Manhattan where we tell the Art Deco stories of Washington Heights.

You will reach new heights in the Art Deco realm with this visit to one of the northernmost neighborhoods in the borough of Manhattan. ADSNY architectural historian Anthony W. Robins will lead us through the beauty of Art Deco in Washington Heights, starting with an engaging richly illustrated Powerpoint presentation in the stunning Art Deco Hebrew Tabernacle followed by a self-guided walking tour.

Sandwiched between Inwood to the north and Harlem to the south, the area is named after Fort Washington, a stronghold which once sat at the highest natural point on the island of Manhattan. The late 19th century saw a sprinkling of palatial mansions, but with the extension of subway lines - once again - developers began constructing residential apartment buildings in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Washington Heights came to national attention with Lin Manuel Miranda’s Tony award winning musical (and subsequent film) In the Heights, but how many of us have actually been there? This is the perfect opportunity to expand your Manhattan horizons and discover a whole new world of Deco delights.

Following the talk at the beautiful Art Deco (and air conditioned) Hebrew Tabernacle, all attendees will be provided with a detailed, self-guided handout which will direct you through the beauty of Art Deco in Washington Heights. You may choose to do the tour that afternoon, or postpone it for a cooler, more comfortable time when you can go at your own pace.

About the Guide:

Anthony W. Robins has been guiding natives and visitors to the city’s wonders of steel and stone for decades. He has led hundreds of walking tours of New York history and architecture. A founding member of ADSNY, Robins created the Society’s original tour program in 1981. In 2017, the Guides Association of New York City honored him with the “Guiding Spirit Award.” He lectures on New York history and architecture to audiences both in the United States and abroad, teaches various levels of students about architecture and the development of New York City, and has authored six books and a number of short guidebooks, as well as many newspaper and magazine articles. His award-winning book, New York Art Deco: A Guide to Gotham’s Jazz Age Architecture (SUNY Press, 2017), explores Art Deco throughout the five boroughs.
