Telling the Art Deco Stories of Our Neighborhoods: Bay Ridge
About the Program
Join us when architectural historian Matt Postal discusses the history of Bay Ridge, a Brooklyn neighborhood that enjoys unmatched views of the Narrows and New York Harbor. Learn how this once-exclusive suburb was transformed by the construction of the subway and the arrival of memorable Art Deco apartment houses in late 1920s and 1930s. Enlivened by fanciful patterned brickwork and ornate lobbies, many of these new residential buildings were given nautical names, such as Sea View Towers, the Marine View, and Harbor Heights Hall. Our talk and walk also highlights stylish business buildings and an impressive Art Deco church complex designed by the ecclesiastical specialist Henry V. Murphy.
Postal will point out the details and decorative motifs that made this an outstanding period in New York's architectural history.
This two-part program, part of our ongoing TADS program, begins with an illustrated talk at the Brooklyn Public Library, Bay Ridge Branch, followed by a walking tour highlighting memorable examples designed by gifted yet unsung Brooklyn architects.
This in-depth exploration of Bay Ridge includes a 35–45 minute PowerPoint presentation, followed by a 75–90 minute walking tour of the 1920s and 30s architecture in the neighborhood.
