Telling the Art Deco Stories of Our Neighborhoods: Brighton Beach

About the Program

It’s summer! We’re going to the beach. Brighton Beach.

The oceanfront community Brighton Beach was once a popular seaside resort area, but the opening of the BMT’s Brighton Line in the early 1920s made it easily accessible via subway and a desirable place to live. Apartment buildings that rose in the 1920s and 30’s incorporated the uniquely modern Art Deco style, making it today an important and dazzling Art Deco destination.

No bathing suits required for this new in-person installment of ADSNY’s Telling the Art Deco Stories of Our Neighborhoods series, come discover Brighton Beach - and why it exults in one of New York City’s largest concentrations of Art Deco Buildings, boasting breathtaking streamlined exteriors and awe-inspiring interiors.

Our guide, the distinguished architectural historian Matt Postal, will point out the details and decorative motifs that made this an outstanding period in New York's architectural history.

This two-part program, part of our ongoing TADS program, begins with an illustrated talk at the Brooklyn Public Library, Brighton Beach Brach followed by a walking tour highlighting memorable examples designed by gifted yet unsung Brooklyn architects.

This in-depth exploration of Brighton Beach include a 35–45 minute PowerPoint presentation, followed by a 75–90 minute walking tour of the 1920s and 30s architecture in the neighborhood.

After the presentation you are welcome to explore the wide selection of Russian Restaurants in this community dubbed Little Odessa.

About the Speaker:

Our guide, architectural historian Matt Postal, leads walking tours throughout New York City. Specializing in 19th and 20th century architecture, he has taught graduate courses at the New York School of Interior Design.
