About the Event:

The opening of Tutankhamen’s tomb in November 1922 led to a renewal of interest in ancient Egypt and related antiquarian forms, shaping the design of a memorable group of Art Deco structures in New York City. Join architectural historian Matt Postal and discover the sources, history, and design of these marvelously ornate and exotic wonders, including Thomas W. Lamb’s extraordinary Pythian Temple, William Van Allen’s celebrated Chrysler Building, and Woodlawn Cemetery’s haunting Straus family mausoleum, featuring metalwork by Samuel Yellin and funerary sculpture by Lee Lawrie.

About the Speaker:

Architectural historian Matt Postal specializes in 19th– and 20th–century architecture, teaches graduate courses at the New York School of Interior Design, and leads walking tours throughout New York City.
