About the Program:
In this latest new in-person installment of ADSNY’s Telling the Art Deco Stories of Our Neighborhoods series, we’ll be exploring the fascinating history and Art Deco architecture of Midwood, Brooklyn.
Art Deco arrived in the Midwood neighborhood of Brooklyn in the 1930s, introducing modern design and decoration to this time-honored community. Join architectural historian Matt Postal for an illustrated lecture and walking tour and learn about the area's transformation in the early 20th century and some of the historic neighborhood’s finest Art Deco buildings.
We’ll view stylish apartment houses and striking commercial structures, designed principally by Brooklyn architects in the late 1920s and 1930s. Their distinctive architectural features and decorative motifs establish Art Deco one of New York City’s most enduring and memorable styles.
In this two-part program, architectural historian Matt Postal will begin with an illustrated presentation at the Midwood Library discussing such neighborhood highlights as:
- Art Deco Apartment houses such as the Versailles, Highway Gardens, and Madison Garden Apartment, many with stunning lobbies.
- The former Dime Savings Bank of Brooklyn
- Notable buildings along Kings Highway and neighboring streets
- And much more....
Following the presentation at the Midwood Library, Postal will then lead registrants on a guided walking tour of the neighborhood, highlighting Deco architectural features along the way.
TADS programs offer a free illustrated lecture and cultural walking tour to local communities, and are specifically designed to help educate residents about the unique Art Deco architecture and cultural history of their neighborhood, enabling them to participate in their heritage, contribute to the broader cultural landscape of the city’s urban fabric, promote greater understanding of the architectural value of communities, and encourage preservation of culture, art, and architecture on a local scale.
This in-depth exploration of Midwood will include a 35–45 minute PowerPoint presentation, followed by a 75–90 minute walking tour of the 1920s and 30s architecture in the neighborhood.
About the Speaker:
Our guide, architectural historian Matt Postal, leads walking tours throughout New York City. Specializing in 19th and 20th century architecture, he has taught graduate courses at the New York School of Interior Design.
