About the Program:
On this immersive trip, we will explore how the uniquely glamorous culture of Los Angeles — with its Golden Age of Hollywood — led to the creation of the city’s beautiful Art Deco structures through first-hand glimpses into the breadth and variety of the Deco adaptations unique to California’s architecture and design heritage.
While this trip is available as a five-day package (click here), we are also offering the opportunity to sign up for three single-day immersion packages — Tuesday, May 9th, Wednesday, May 10th, and Thursday, May 11th — as well as an exciting two-night Weekend on the Queen Mary.
On this, our two-day weekend immersion, the adventure begins early Friday afternoon. John Thomas, former president of the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles and co-author of Art Deco Long Beach, will lead us on an open-top bus tour of the stunning Art Deco and Streamline Moderne sites dating from the city’s rebuilding following a devastating 1933 earthquake. Stops include the Metro Apartments and Lafayette Condominiums, St. Mary’s Hospital of 1937, the beautifully restored landmark Hancock Motors dealership, and the WPA-era Recreation — a mosaic tile mural, said to be among the world’s largest, originally adorning the façade of the Municipal Auditorium and later rescued from that building’s demolition. Mr. Thomas — who is also the historic resources advisor to the Queen Mary — will accompany us back to the ship for an insider’s tour, followed by cocktails at the ship’s famed Observation Bar and then dinner.
On Saturday morning, after breakfast on the ship, we’ll take an hour-long ferry ride across the Gulf of Santa Catalina for a full-day exploration of Catalina Island. Our visit includes a walking tour of the resort community of Avalon, once the haunt of Hollywood luminaries; lunch at a favorite local waterside restaurant; and a behind-the-scenes visit to the spectacular 1929 Art Deco Ballroom in the Catalina Casino, fully restored to its original grandeur — including murals of Catalina’s history by John Gabriel Beckman (whose work also adorns Hollywood’s Grauman’s Chinese Theatre). The world-famous ballroom once hosted thousands of dancers swinging to the sounds of big band music. And we’ve planned our tour so that you can do the same: those who wish may dance the night away at that evening’s once-a-year Avalon Ball, hosted by the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles. Those not staying will ferry back for an evening at leisure aboard the Queen Mary or exploring Long Beach.
We’ll savor our final moments on Sunday morning by exploring the ship’s beautiful interior design and enjoying our final group brunch before our magical trip back in time ends and we reluctantly return to 2023.
