Destination Deco: Los Angeles Full-Day Immersion—Downtown & Uptown

About the Program:

On this immersive trip, we will explore how the uniquely glamorous culture of Los Angeles — with its Golden Age of Hollywood — led to the creation of the city’s beautiful Art Deco structures through first-hand glimpses into the breadth and variety of the Deco adaptations unique to California’s architecture and design heritage.

While this trip is available as a five-day package (click here), we are also offering the opportunity to sign up for three single-day immersion packages — Tuesday, May 9th, Wednesday, May 10th, and Thursday, May 11th — as well as an exciting two-night Weekend on the Queen Mary

On this, Thursday’s immersion, our day begins with a very special visit to a private apartment in the beautiful Eastern Columbia Building — a rare privilege available only to our attendees. From there, we’ll commence a walking tour of the Art Deco architecture of Downtown Los Angeles, including:

  • The Oviatt Building: headquarters of a prestigious L.A. haberdasher, and including interior decorative work by Rene Lalique;

  • The Title Guarantee & Trust Building of 1930: inspired by the Chicago Tribune tower, but adding Deco detailing to the Gothic of its model; lobby has murals of Southern California history by Hugo Ballin;

  • The Garfield Building: combines Deco with Art Nouveau;

  • The 1926 Los Angeles Central Library: by Grosvenor Goodhue, combines revival styles with the new modernism; its proposed demolition in the 1970s led to the creation of the Los Angeles Conservancy.

Lunch will be at Engine Company No. 28, a restaurant housed in a restored 1912 firehouse. One of the first reinforced concrete stations in Los Angeles, the building was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

We’ll then travel via luxury coach to Frank Lloyd Wright’s breathtaking Hollyhock House, where, after an exclusive curator introduction, we’ll have the opportunity to explore the gorgeous house and its equally stunning grounds on our own.

Our day will close at the historic Griffith Observatory with a special guided tour of the site by the Observatory’s director, then a Wolfgang Puck-catered box dinner on the terrace as we watch sunset over the City of Angels.
