About the Program:

Learn more about Art Deco and the culture of the 1920s and ’30s by being part of the Deco Book Club — a program available only to ADSNY members, and it’s FREE to join!

Here’s how it works: bimonthlyregistrants will receive details on a fiction or nonfiction book selection, which will be readily available either through purchase or at your local library. During the subsequent two-month reading period, additional information on the book, its author, its location, etc., will be sent to registrants to further both your enjoyment and understanding of the text and its literary milieu.

Following the close of the two months, there will be an event planned around the book‘s topic — such as vintage cocktail evenings, author talks, and site visits — where you’ll be able to gather with your fellow book lovers, among others, to socialize, discuss the book in greater depth, and meet a writer or two along the way.

While there will be an extra cost for those select events, Deco Book Club members will not only get advanced notice before they’re announced publicly, but they will also be able to register for them at a special reduced price — an added benefit of joining.

It’s fun — it’s educational — it’s literary — and it’s free! So let’s get reading! Here are the first two selections:

March & April

Flappers and PhilosophersF. Scott Fitzgerald

It may not be as famous as The Great Gatsby, nor as well known as Tales of the Jazz Age, but it is just as finely written, and perhaps captures better the overall essence of early 1920s America, particularly the evolving relationships between men and women in an era of increasing social freedoms and changing sexual mores. Originally published in 1920, it was Fitzgerald’s first short story collection, and features eight classic tales, including “The Ice Palace,” “The Cut-Glass Bowl,” and “Bernice Bobs Her Hair.”
Associated event: A Vintage Cocktail Evening

May & June

Midnight in Cairo: The Divas of Egypt’s Roaring ’20sRaphael Cormack

During the 1920s and ’30s, Cairo was not only one of the world’s most multicultural cities, it was also a magnet for the ambitious and talented, where a vibrant music, theater, film, and cabaret scene flourished, dominated by women. Cormack unveils the rich histories of the independent, enterprising divas, who, buffeted by the crosswinds of colonialism and nationalism, conservatism and liberalism, and patriarchy and feminism, created a generation of celebrities that offered a new vision for women in Egypt and throughout the Middle East.
