About the Event:

Join us for a special insider’s tour of the magnificent Temple Emanu-el on East 65th Street and its spectacular Hildreth Meière–designed mosaics.

Founded in the 1840s on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, Congregation Emanu-el was instrumental in the establishment of Reform Judaism in the United States. As the community grew, it moved first to Fifth Avenue and 43rd Street, then to its present Upper East Side location in the late 1920s. Designed by architects Kohn, Butler, and Stein in the Moorish–Romanesque style, the present temple is one of the largest synagogues in the world, seating 2,500 people. The interior was designed concurrently by associate architects Mayers, Murray & Phillip, who enlisted artist Hildreth Meière to create Byzantine-inspired Art Deco glass mosaics to embellish the eight-story-high arch of the main sanctuary, as well as the Ark housing the Torah scrolls on the eastern wall behind it.

Temple Administrator Mark Heutlinger will lead us on an exploration of the temple’s bold architecture and unique interior decoration — which comprises over 20 types of stone; ceramic, glass, and marble mosaics; Guastavino tiles; ornamental metalwork; painted and gilded plaster; and inlaid wood marquetry — while Hilly Dunn and Anna Kupik — Meière’s granddaughter and great-granddaughter, respectively — will provide in-depth background on the artist, her work, and her techniques.

You won’t want to miss what is sure to be a thrilling architectural evening.
