About the Event:

Journey to Paris with ADSNY as curators Emmanuel Breon and Bénédicte Mayer of the Cité de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine lead us on a virtual tour of their wonderful new exhibition, Art Déco France—North America, for a truly international look at the long-standing aesthetic connections between France and the United States, particularly during the 1920s and 1930s, when French Art Deco style influenced the architecture, decor, lifestyle, and taste of North Americans.

This dynamic dialogue was instigated primarily by American and Canadian architects who, starting in the late 19th century, had been trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and brought decidedly French ideas of composition and ornamentation back across the Atlantic. This emulation culminated in 1925 during the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels, when a 104-member American delegation was sent to Paris to observe this resolutely modern “new style.”

At the same time, more and more French architects were working on the North American continent, and upon their return to France in the 1930s, their experiences inspired a new building style centered on more grandiose American proportions and modern perspectives.

This trans-Atlantic architectural interchange in turn influenced not only those directly involved in the building trades on both continents, such as painters, sculptors, interior designers, ironworkers, and muralists, but also those in the fashion, jewelry, and tableware fields, with much of the work predicated on Art Deco style.

This special trans-Atlantic event, revealing fresh insights into the architecture, culture, and artistic life of this teeming period, will surely be in demand, so register today!

Even though this event is online, it will include a live PowerPoint — with wonderful images that you will be able to see directly on your computer screen, tablet, or mobile device — as well as a Q&A session with participants.

Can’t join us at the time of the live event? No problem! Those who register will receive a recording of the entire program a few days after the live presentation. When you sign up for the program you have the opportunity to watch, or rewatch, the recording at a time more convenient for your schedule.
