About the Program:
Join ADSNY for a Sunday afternoon fall stroll along Manhattan’s Gold Coast - the Upper East Side - where tucked among the Beaux-Arts town houses and sedate neo-Georgian apartment buildings, the neighborhood has remarkable examples of the work of some of New York’s best Art Deco architects.
Led by architectural historian and ADSNY’s Vice-President, Anthony Robins, the tour will give us an up close look at some of the area’s finest examples of Art Deco design, including:
- An apartment house by Raymond Hood (built for the owner of the Daily News).
- One of Manhattan’s very few Art Deco town houses
- The elegant Carlyle Hotel
- Apartment houses by Sloan & Robertson, Horace Ginsberg and George and Edward Blum—the Blums having designed some of the very first Art Deco apartment buildings anywhere in the city.
You won’t want to miss this opportunity to see these and more of the sometimes overlooked, but impressive buildings, of this stylish New York neighborhood.

About the Guide:
Anthony W. Robins has been guiding natives and visitors to the city’s wonders of steel and stone for several decades. He has led hundreds of walking tours of New York history and architecture. A founding member of ADSNY, Robins created the Society’s original tour program in 1981. In 2017, the Guides Association of New York City honored him with the “Guiding Spirit Award.” He lectures on New York history and architecture to audiences both in the United States and abroad, teaches various levels of students about architecture and the development of New York City, and has authored five books and a number of short guide books, as well as many newspaper and magazine articles. His latest award-winning book, New York Art Deco: A Guide to Gotham’s Jazz Age Architecture, explores Art Deco throughout the five boroughs.

- IF YOU ARE UNWELL: Stay home if you are feeling sick or symptomatic. If you have been in contact with someone with related symptoms, or who has tested positive within the last 14 days, also stay home.
- COVID RISK: Though positivity rates are declining, an inherent risk of exposure to COVID-19 exists in any public space where people are present. Those joining ADSNY’S in-person programming do so at their own risk to such exposure.

We cannot accommodate any walk-ups for the tour, so please be sure to register in advance if you would like to attend.
Your ADSNY membership must be valid the date of the event to be able to take advantage of the member discount. If your membership expires between the time of event registration and the date of the event, you will be asked to renew your membership.

- Enter the requested information in the registration form and follow the instructions to pay online and complete your registration
- Upon completion of your event registration, an email confirmation will be sent to the email address you used to register. If you do not see this email in your inbox, please check your spam folder.
- You will receive an email with the tour's meeting location the week before the program

Please note:
- ADSNY does not mail event tickets. When you register, your name(s) and contact information is added to the event’s list of attendees
- ADSNY does not permit animals at events unless they are a registered service animal
- All ADSNY programs are non-smoking events. Smoking will not be permitted
- All ADSNY events are rain or shine
The tour will be approximately two hours. Participants should be prepared to walk or stand for the entire time and be outside without access to climate-controlled spaces for most of the tour.
All ticket sales are final. Sorry, there are no refunds or exchanges.
