Northern Deco: Art Deco Architecture in Montreal (Video Event)

About the Event:

The Art Deco Society of New York's series of web-based talks inspired by our Destination Deco travel program continues with a virtual visit exploring the Art Deco architecture in Montreal.

Founded in 1642, Montreal, the second-largest city in Canada, and the largest city in the province of Quebec, possesses a distinctive culture derived from the confluence of the French and the English traditions. In this web-based program we'll see how Art Deco architecture is part of the historic fabric of the city.

Because of its close connection to Paris, Art Deco came earlier to Montreal than most North American cities. In this presentation, expert Sandra Cohen-Rose will show how Montreal developed a distinct Northern Deco style, with a unique stylistic vocabulary that evolved to reflect changing socio-economic conditions. We will also see how architects came from the United States, Europe, and Australia to join Canadian architects to establish a stimulating visual legacy of Art Deco buildings. We will also see how, even in their late work, several architects continued to turn to the Art Deco vocabulary.

In this online presentation, Cohen-Rose will also show how, on May 12, 2006, Montreal was the first North American city designated a UNESCO City of Design by the Global Alliance for Cultural Diversity. This special program will show how "design in Montreal is not simply for show but a source of daily well-being."

This recorded video event includes the original PowerPoint––with wonderful images that you will be able to see directly on your computer screen, tablet, or mobile device.

About the Speaker:

Sandra Cohen-Rose divides her time between Montreal and Austin, Eastern Township, Quebec. She is the author of the first book on Canadian Art Deco, Northern Deco - Art Deco Architecture in Montreal. Recently she wrote the chapter, "The Evolution and Role of Art Deco Societies and World Congresses in the Preservation and Popularization of Art Deco," for the 2019 Routledge Companion to Art Deco. Montreal Art Deco references play a prominent role in her first novel, Waskaganish and Cohen-Rose is presently working on a sequel.

In 2002 she founded Art Deco Montréal, which in 2009 hosted the well-received 10th World Congress on Art Deco. From 2011–15 she was Facilitator for the international Coalition of Art Deco Societies. She has lectured extensively and written and contributed to articles on Montreal Art Deco.
