About the Program

The Art Deco Society of New York (ADSNY) is excited to announce special day-rates so that you can more selectively enjoy our immersive Autumn in New York weekend festivities, which will explore and celebrate New York City’s finest Art Deco enclaves. In addition to experiencing the city’s interwar treasures and mementos of Jazz Age culture, we will dine in iconic hotspots that embody our favorite era and be hosted in a private home overflowing with Deco riches.

This expert-guided look at New York’s Midtown Art Deco icons takes attendees to the Empire State and Chrysler Buildings in addition to Rockefeller Center. This exciting day also highlights delightful lesser-known Deco surprises, such as the often overlooked 275 Madison Avenue and the American Radiator Building.

Highlights of the day include:

  • Visits to premier Deco Towers and some of the most opulent and extraordinary 1920s and 30s lobbies ever designed
  • Two of prominent architect Raymond Hood’s most impressive office towers
  • Several examples of New York’s stylized Art Deco terracotta by architectural ornamentation specialist, Rene Paul Chambellan
  • A respite from the hustle and bustle of midtown Manhattan to enjoy a three-course lunch at a lovely rooftop restaurant with spectacular views of the Empire State Building.

Following lunch, our day will resume with a tour that gives the inside scoop on the secrets behind the glamorous walls and hidden spaces of the world’s greatest Deco commercial center, Rockefeller Center. We’ll see how this one-of-a-kind city within a city was created for commerce but conceived with art in mind, including beautiful Deco ornamentation throughout.

After a short break to recharge and refresh on your own, all attendees are invited to enjoy the official opening Welcome Reception of our Autumn in New York program!

Cleaned and sanitized audio assistance devices for all attendees on the walking tour portion of the day.

Bakelite: A Collector’s Odyssey

This exclusive cocktail reception will be held in the private townhouse of an ADSNY member that boasts one of the most remarkable collections of Bakelite objects in the world. One entire floor of this Upper East Side townhouse has been converted into what can only be described as a Bakelite Museum. With cases and cases, shelves and shelves, and drawers and drawers of Bakelite, this collection is a true visual feast. We’ll enjoy everything from Bakelite radios and clocks, to jewelry and buttons, and even boxes, umbrella handles, kitchen utensils and more! We can’t wait to share this memorable welcome evening with you!
