About the Program:

Join the Art Deco Society of New York and celebrated architectural historian Francis Morrone for a new recorded Video Event exploring the Art Deco typography of some of New York's most famous Deco treasures. 

From ancient times to the present, lettering on buildings has been an important part of architecture. From sacred and honorific inscriptions, to building names to directional signs, such eye-catching lettering is often carefully designed to complement the building's other stylistic features.

Don't miss this exciting eventwhich you can enjoy from the comfort of your own home at a time that best fits your schedulethat explores how one of Art Deco's many pleasures is the lettering on buildings. In this web-based illustrated lecture, we'll survey the often beautiful and always interesting lettering on Art Deco buildings in New York, as well as on other buildings of the interwar period and immediate postwar periods.

About the Guide:

Francis Morrone is an architectural historian and a writer, and the author of thirteen books, including "Guide to New York City Urban Landscapes" (W.W. Norton, 2013) and, with Henry Hope Reed, "The New York Public Library: The Architecture and Decoration of the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building" (W.W. Norton, 2011), as well as of architectural guidebooks to Philadelphia and to Brooklyn. He is the author of the forthcoming 6th edition of "Blue Guide New York." In addition, Morrone is the recipient of the Landmarks Lion Award of the Historic Districts Council, the Arthur Ross Award of the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art, and of NYU's Excellence in Teaching Award, and Travel and Leisure Magazine named him one of the thirteen best tour guides in the world. His specialties are 19th-century architecture, public sculpture, and Edith Wharton, and, for the last few years, alternative modernisms of the 20th century.
