The White City of Tel Aviv Video Event

About the Program:

The Art Deco Society of New York’s series of web-based illustrated talks inspired by our Destination Deco travel program continues with a virtual discovery of the architecture, cultural history, and preservation of Tel Aviv’s White City.

In this recorded video presentation––which you can enjoy from the comfort of your own home at a time that best fits your schedule––explore how Tel Aviv is filled with an exceptional ensemble of architecture and design of the interwar period that often blurs the lines between the Art Deco, Streamline Moderne, International, and Bauhaus styles.

Micha Gross, Director of the Bauhaus Center Tel Aviv, leads us through striking examples of 1930s and 40s buildings designed by European-trained designers and architects.

In this web-based event Gross shows how the White City––which boasts over 4,000 beautifully designed period buildings––displays a rich variation of architecture that characteristically rejects excessive surface decoration. The sleek façades contrast with decorative entrances to reveal the unique story of a bourgeois society that developed this important city to provide Jewish refugees from Germany, and other European countries, a new home.

We also see how gentrification enables preservation of many of the protected buildings and learn of the private owners, building companies, and municipality's department for preservation involved in the ongoing renewal of this heritage site.

This recorded video event includes the original PowerPoint––with wonderful images that you will be able to see directly on your computer screen, tablet, or mobile device.
