About the Program:

In this installment of ADSNY's Telling the Art Deco Stories of our Neighborhood's series, we dive into how New Yorker's of all ages, throughout the five boroughs summered in Art Deco and Moderne style!

What better time than the start of summer to celebrate New York City’s eleven extraordinary WPA swimming pools? Join architectural historian Matt Postal for a high dive into these artistic and logistical triumphs.

In this online program we'll see how these culturally diverse public spaces were completed under Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia and Parks Commissioner Robert Moses during the summer of 1936. These remarkable public works are known for their vast size, underwater night lighting, and elegant Art Deco details.

Highlights include pools and play centers in Astoria, Brownsville, Greenpoint, Morrissania, Tompkinsville, and Washington Heights!

Even though this tour is online, it will include a live PowerPoint––with wonderful images that you will be able to see directly on your computer screen, tablet, or mobile device––as well as a moderated Q&A session with participants.

Can't join us at the time of the live event? No problem! When you register for the live program you are guaranteed to receive a recording of the entire program a few days after the live presentation, which you can watch at a time most convenient for you.

About the Speaker:

Our guide, architectural historian Matt Postal, leads walking tours throughout New York City. Specializing in 19th and 20th century architecture, he teaches graduate courses at the New York School of Interior Design.
