Telling the Art Deco Story of Jamaica Video Event

About the Program:

Our Telling the Art Deco Stories of our Neighborhood's online series continues so you can virtually visit New York's Art Deco enclaves with the Art Deco Society of New York––from anywhere.

In this recorded video presentation––which you can enjoy from the comfort of your own home at a time that best fits your schedule––architectural historian Matt Postal will lead us through Jamaica, Queens, which is a vibrant commercial center that boasts a varied and often overlooked collection of Art Deco buildings.

From modern classical to moderne, Postal will highlight this Queens neighborhood, where modern aesthetics transformed the appearance of local banks, department stores, factories, and nightspots during the 1920s and 1930s. Highlights include an aluminum-clad supper club, La Casina, where rumba rhythms once drew dancers, and the Suffolk Title & Guarantee Building, a slender skyscraper with colorful terracotta panels fashioned by Rene Chambellan.

Further afield, we’ll focus on Art Deco’s impact on the public realm, emphasizing memorable New Deal structures that were commissioned to protect, educate, and serve this growing Queens community, such as an intimate post office containing “The First Amendment,” a little known mural painted by Ben Shahn.

Sign up today for this new tour of a neighborhood ADSNY has yet to feature.

This recorded video event includes the original PowerPoint––with wonderful images that you will be able to see directly on your computer screen, tablet, or mobile device.
