About the Program:

ADSNY’s World Art Deco Month celebrations continue with a riveting look at the spectacular work of Hildreth Meière, a native and long-time resident of New York, who is also one of the most talented, prolific, and versatile American muralists of the twentieth century.

Author and historian Kathleen Murphy Skolnik will lead us on a tantalizing exploration of  Meière’s approximately one hundred completed commissions during her forty-year career, which extended from the early 1920s to her death in 1961. Though Meière’s impressive work can be found throughout the United States, some of her most significant designs are located in New York City.

This visually delightful web-based presentation is the perfect celebration during World Art Deco Month. We’ll explore Meière’s designs throughout Manhattan, including her:

  • Stunning color scheme of the red banking room at One Wall Street in Lower Manhattan
  • Gleaming metal and enamel roundels on the 50th Street façade of Radio City Music Hall
  • Glittering glass mosaics in the sanctuary of Temple Emanu-El on Fifth Avenue at 65th Street

and several more exciting masterpieces in between! We’ll also step back in time to see Meière’s eleven commissions for the 1939 New York World’s Fair––a truly special treat!

Even though this program is online, it will include a live PowerPoint––with wonderful images that you will be able to see directly on your computer screen, tablet, or mobile device––as well as a moderated Q&A session with participants.

Can't join us at the time of the live event? No problem! When you register for the live program you are guaranteed to receive a recording of the entire program a few days after the live presentation, which you can watch at a time most convenient for you.
