About the Program:

Celebrate World Art Deco Month with the Art Deco Society of New York in this engaging illustrated talk, that will get up close and personal with the world’s greatest Art Deco skyscraper––the Chrysler Building.

In this online program we’ll explore rarely-seen photographs that document the day-by-day building of this architectural masterpiece. We will also see extraordinary close-up scenes of New York in the 1920s and 30s.

Using amazing period photographs, author David Stravitz will zoom in so close that we'll feel a sense of being transported back in time 90 years, as one of the world's greatest cities expanded towards the sky. The web-based presentation will include rare images of buildings, street scenes, storefronts, people, and signage that span before, during, and after the Great Depression. We’ll also learn the fascinating story of how Stravitz’s deep interest in photography led to his discovery of this treasure trove of photographs.

Even though this program is online, it will include a live PowerPoint––with wonderful images that you will be able to see directly on your computer screen, tablet, or mobile device––as well as a moderated Q&A session with participants.

Can't join us at the time of the live event? No problem! When you register for the live program you are guaranteed to receive a recording of the entire program a few days after the live presentation, which you can watch at a time most convenient for you.

About the Speaker:

David Stravitz is an author, photographer, inventor, and industrial designer who has developed a wide variety of consumer products with close to 200 patents. His deep interest in photography led to his discovery of 500 8×10 negatives of early twentieth century New York, including more than 150 images of the day-by-day construction of the Chrysler Building. He has authored two books resulting from this discovery: The Chrysler Building, Creating an Icon Day by Day and New York, Empire City 1920-1945.
