Hello Sunshine! 1930s Deco at the Great British Seaside Video Event

About the Program:

The Art Deco Society of New York’s series of web-based illustrated talks inspired by our Destination Deco travel program continues with our virtual vacation to the British coast to discover the best of its interwar architectural and cultural heritage with architectural historian Dr. Kathryn Ferry.

In this recorded video presentation––which you can enjoy from the comfort of your own home at a time that best fits your schedule––you are transported to a range of streamlined Deco Moderne seaside buildings for some much-needed sunshine.

Representing our sister organization, the Art Deco Society UK, Ferry explores how the 1930s was a boom time for Britain’s coastal resorts when the working class won the right to paid vacations and new sunbathing fashion captured the imagination and quickly spread through all levels of society. We see how architecture reflected these new leisure priorities with vast outdoor pools and amusement parks that quickly sprang up to cater to the masses arriving in great numbers. Hotels boasted balconies that captured the sun's rays, while Butlin’s holiday camps offered guests the chance to imbibe in an "American Cocktail Bar".

Highlights of this web-based talk include stops along the British coast to visit the

  • Iconic De la Warr Pavilion at Bexhill in Sussex
  • Marine Court at St Leonards-on-Sea, known as the "liner on land" when it opened in 1938
  • Casino at Blackpool Pleasure Beach, which was part of an Art Deco make-over of the famous Lancashire amusement park by celebrated architect Joseph Emberton

Our seaside tour also includes virtual visits to marvelous 1930s Art Deco piers, promenades, and even parking lots!

This recorded video event includes the original PowerPoint––with wonderful images that you will be able to see directly on your computer screen, tablet, or mobile device
