Paris/New York: Design, Fashion, Culture 1925–1940 Video Event

About the Program:

Celebrated curator and author Donald Albrecht leads us on an exploration of the dynamic relationship between two of our favorite cities––New York and Paris––and shows how New York City, looking to Paris for inspirationbetween the two world wars, became the international cultural capital it is today!

In this recorded video presentation––which you can enjoy from the comfort of your own home at a time that best fits your schedule––you'll see how a burst of creative energy in the fields of architecture, design, and fashion characterized the era. Shaping new styles of buildings and furnishings, redefining contemporary dress, and giving visual form to avant-garde performing arts, architects and designers forged a still-influential modern aesthetic. In this event Albrecht illustrates how the interchange between them was never simple and comprised in equal measure admiration and envy, respect, and rivalry, as artists and designers in each city interpreted and incorporated principles of Art Deco, Cubism, International Style, Neo-Romanticism, and Surrealism into their own practices.

This beautifully illustrated online lecture brings together well-known figures such as Josephine Baker and Salvador Dalí and revives the reputations of forgotten ones. Whether famous or not, they rarely worked in isolation, preferring instead to participate in international dialogues that crossed national boundaries and linked capital cities in collaborative artistic enterprise.

This recorded video event includes the original PowerPoint––with wonderful images that you will be able to see directly on your computer screen, tablet, or mobile device.
