In addition, we also get Jennifer's insider view on why Liu Jipiao is known as the “Father of Chinese Art Deco," and explore how his life changed after fleeing China in 1947 to America.
While we explore the life and work of Liu Jipiao in this web-based event, we also get a fascinating look into how China's response to domestic and international crises gave birth to a new generation of Chinese artists while Paris was spinning into the Roaring Twenties. We see how these new artists were unified by the ideology to learn from the West and develop a new art. In this program Jennifer gives us a glimpse of the arrival of the first wave of the Chinese artists to Paris in the 1920s and show us how they encountered Western art.
Scholars have only recently begun to rediscover Chinese architect Liu Jipiao, and you won't want to miss this special event exploring the importance he played in our favorite era!

About the Speaker:
Jennifer Wong is a firstborn American on her mother’s side and maternal granddaughter of Chinese Art Deco Architect, Liu Jipiao (刘既漂) 1900–1992. She has her BA in East Asian Studies from Wesleyan University Connecticut, focusing on Chinese Language and History. She studied in China from 1986–1987 as a personal journey, discovering her roots and connecting with family she never knew.
Jennifer is the self-appointed family historian who’s research has taken her and her family to Paris where her grandfather’s work was displayed in the Cité de l'architecture & du patrimoine’s 1925, When Art Déco Dazzled the World Exhibit. She was honored to present at the World Congress on Art Deco in Shanghai, and several years later at the Hong Kong City U Exhibit The France-China Connection. Jennifer lives in Los Angeles and is thrilled to be presenting to the ADSNY as New York City is the home of her heart!
