About the Program:

The Art Deco Society of New York’s series of web-based illustrated talks inspired by our Destination Deco travel program continues with our mid-winter virtual vacation to the British coast to discover the best of its interwar architectural and cultural heritage with architectural historian Dr. Kathryn Ferry.

Packed full of beautiful illustrations, this program will transport us to a range of streamlined Deco Moderne seaside buildings for some much-needed winter sunshine.

Representing our sister organization, the Art Deco Society UK, Ferry will explore how the 1930s was a boom time for Britain’s coastal resorts when the working class won the right to paid vacations and new sunbathing fashion captured the imagination and quickly spread through all levels of society. We’ll see how architecture reflected these new leisure priorities with vast outdoor pools and amusement parks that quickly sprang up to cater to the masses arriving in great numbers. Hotels boasted balconies that captured the sun's rays, while Butlin’s holiday camps offered guests the chance to imbibe in an "American Cocktail Bar".

Highlights of this web-based talk will include stops along the British coast to visit the

  • Iconic De la Warr Pavilion at Bexhill in Sussex
  • Marine Court at St Leonards-on-Sea, known as the "liner on land" when it opened in 1938
  • Casino at Blackpool Pleasure Beach, which was part of an Art Deco make-over of the famous Lancashire amusement park by celebrated architect Joseph Emberton

Our seaside tour will also include virtual visits to marvelous 1930s Art Deco piers, promenades, and even parking lots!

Even though this program is online, it will include a live PowerPoint––with wonderful images that you will be able to see directly on your computer screen, tablet, or mobile device––as well as a moderated Q&A session with participants.

Can't join us at the time of the live event? No problem! When you register for the live program you are guaranteed to receive a recording of the entire program a few days after the live presentation, which you can watch at a time most convenient for you.
