About the Program:

Don't miss this engaging online event that delves into the captivating work of architect, professor, and designer of furniture, costume, movie sets, commercial, and residential interiors, Robert Mallet-Stevens––who is in some ways one of the least known cultural figures of the French entre-deux-guerres.

Educator Chris Boïcos, of Paris Art Studies, will show how as theoretician and practitioner Mallet-Stevens revolutionized the design of his era as much as his more famous rival, Le Corbusier. Less austere and less doctrinaire than Le Corbusier but also less sleek and posh than his Art Deco colleagues, Mallet-Stevens created a unique architectural look that strikes a perfect balance between the radical ideals of the modern school and the expensive luxuries of Art Deco.

In this strikingly illustrated web-based event we will examine Mallet-Stevens’ collaboration with some or the great creators and patrons of the age: the couturier Paul Poiret, the Surrealist patrons Charles and Marie-Laure Noailles, the cinema director Marcel Herbier and more. We will also focus on his two architectural masterpieces: the Villa Noailles in Hyères (1923–25) and the Villa Cavrois in Lille (1929–1932).

Even though this program is online, it will include a live PowerPoint––with wonderful images that you will be able to see directly on your computer screen, tablet, or mobile device––as well as a moderated Q&A session with participants.

Can't join us at the time of the live event? No problem! When you register for the live program you are guaranteed to receive a recording of the entire program a few days after the live presentation, which you can watch at a time most convenient for you.
