About the Program:

As a special Valentine's treat, Donald Albrecht will lead us on an exploration of the dynamic relationship between two of our favorite cities––New York and Paris––and we will see how New York City, looking to Paris for inspiration, became the international cultural capital it is today between the two world wars!

This web-based event will highlight how a burst of creative energy in the fields of architecture, design, and fashion characterized the era. Shaping new styles of buildings and furnishings, redefining contemporary dress, and giving visual form to avant-garde performing arts, architects and designers forged a still-influential modern aesthetic. In this event Albrecht will illustrate how the interchange between them was never simple and comprised in equal measure admiration and envy, respect, and rivalry, as artists and designers in each city interpreted and incorporated principles of Art Deco, Cubism, International Style, Neo-Romanticism, and Surrealism into their own practices.

This beautifully illustrated online lecture will bring together well-known figures such as Josephine Baker and Salvador Dalí and revive the reputations of forgotten ones. Whether famous or not, they rarely worked in isolation, preferring instead to participate in international dialogues that crossed national boundaries and linked capital cities in collaborative artistic enterprise.

Even though this program is online, it will include a live PowerPoint––with wonderful images that you will be able to see directly on your computer screen, tablet, or mobile device––as well as a moderated Q&A session with participants.

Can't join us at the time of the live event? No problem! When you register for the live program you are guaranteed to receive a recording of the entire program a few days after the live presentation, which you can watch at a time most convenient for you.
