About the Program:

Our Telling the Art Deco Stories of our Neighborhood's online series continues so you can virtually visit New York's Art Deco enclaves with the Art Deco Society of New York––from anywhere.

In the 1930s Art Deco arrived in northwestern Queens, introducing modern design and decoration to this historic community.

In this web-based exploration, from Northern Boulevard to Bowery Bay, architectural historian Matt Postal will discuss such neighborhood highlights as:

  • Astoria Park Pool, the largest of eleven aquatic facilities in New York City that opened on a single summer day in 1936
  • Church of the Most Precious Blood, a rare Art Deco place of worship with unusual ornament and memorable interiors
  • The (former) Strand Theater, one of the last theaters built in Queens before the World War II ban on new construction
  • A Works Progress Administration Building clad with impressive figurative reliefs by the Italian-American sculptor Cesare Stea

Sign up today for this newly developed tour of a neighborhood ADSNY has yet to feature.

Even though this tour is online, it will include a live PowerPoint––with wonderful images that you will be able to see directly on your computer screen, tablet, or mobile device––as well as a moderated Q&A session with participants.

Can't join us at the time of the live event? No problem! When you register for the live program you are guaranteed to receive a recording of the entire program a few days after the live presentation, which you can watch at a time most convenient for you.

About the Guide:

Our guide, architectural historian Matt Postal, leads walking tours throughout New York City. Specializing in 19th and 20th century architecture, he teaches graduate courses at the New York School of Interior Design.
