Vida Americana: Mexican Muralists Remake American Art, 1925-1945 Video Event

About the Program:

The Art Deco Society of New York is proud to present this special video event with celebrated curator, Barbara Haskell, who reveals the profound impact Mexican muralists had on their counterparts in the United States from 1925–1945.

In this recorded video presentation—which you can enjoy from the comfort of your own home at a time that best fits your schedule—Haskell begins with a look at how Mexico underwent a radical cultural transformation at the end of its Revolution in 1920, which established a new relationship between art and the public, giving rise to art that spoke directly to the people about social justice and national life. As we explore stunning period works, we see the many important ways Mexican muralists inspired American artists both to create epic narratives about American history and everyday life and to use their art to protest economic, social, and racial injustices.

This dynamic video event explores how, during the interwar years, numerous American artists traveled to Mexico, and the leading Mexican muralists of the period––José Clemente Orozco, Diego Rivera, and David Alfaro Siqueiros––spent extended periods of time in the United States, executing murals, paintings, and prints; exhibiting their work; and interacting with local artists.

Sign up today to see how the model presented by Mexican muralists of the Deco period galvanized artists in the United States who were seeking to break free of European aesthetic domination to create publicly significant and accessible native art.

This recorded video event includes the original PowerPoint—with wonderful images that you will be able to see directly on your computer screen, tablet, or mobile device.
